Equipment

Below you can find a list of obligatory and mandatory equipment for each of the runs – Chornohora Sky Marathon (CSM) та Chornohora Sky Race (CSR). The list includes short description of each item and the reason why it is recommended or required to have it during the run.

For starting the race all participants must have the equipment items marked as „obligatory“ here. Before the start organizers can exclude some of these items depending on weather conditions. Runners must wear all the obligatory equipment or carry it in their backpacks. Volunteers may ask the participants to show their equipment and in case any of it is missing, a 20-minute time penalty will be applied.

Equipment CSM CSR
Mobile phone

It must be in good working condition and be on during the whole run, with call volume at maximum level and battery fully charged.

Why?

Mobile phones will allow runners to stay in contact with organizers in emergency situations. Make sure the battery is fully charged before the run and avoid any unnecessary use of your phone. It is recommended to turn off wifi, bluetooth and other functions that consume a lot of battery power.

О О
Whistle

Normal whistles or those that are built into some hydration packs can also be used.

Why?

Whistle is required to call for help in case there is any emergency.

О О
Thermal blanket

Thermal blanket (also known as “space blanket”) is a low-weight blanket made of heat-reflective thin plastic sheeting that is gold on one side and silver on the other side and is designed for reflecting or preserving heat depending on the side that is used. The minimal size of the blanket must be 1,4m x 2,0m.

Why?

Thermal blanket is usually used for covering an injured person while waiting for help in emergency situations, but it can also provide good protection against wind or rain. Depending on the situation thermal blanket can be used in 2 different ways to cover an injured person:

– For preserving body heat reflective silver side should be on the inside, while the gold one face the outside. This use is appropriate to prevent hypothermia or while waiting for help in emergency situations.

– For reducing body heat the opposite must be done: the golden side must face person’s body, while the silver one be outside. This use can be applied to prevent heatstroke and while waiting for help in hot weather conditions

О О
Emergency headlamp with a spare battery kit

Emergency headlamp during the run will help to keep hands free. Before the start make sure that it is working and that batteries are fully charged. Moreover, pay attention that it doesn’t turn itself on in your backpack or on the belt.

Why?

In case a headlamp turns itself on without runner’s noticing it, the batteries may be quickly discharged and make it impossible to use the headlamp later when it is needed. Therefore, it is required that runners have a spare battery kit.

R
Waterproof breathable hooded jacket

A waterproof jacket with such breathable membranes as Gore-Tex, Clima Pro, Water Proff, MemBrain, H2O, Hyvent etc. which are suitable for extreme weather conditions in the mountains. Recommended waterproof and breathability rating is 10,000mm and 5,000g/m2/24hr respectively

Why?

Waterproof breathable hooded jacket may be used during the whole run or just for a few hours depending on weather conditions. Why does it need to have a hood? Head is one of the highest heat loss areas of the body — therefore, it needs to be well-protected against rain, wind and cold weather when it is required. Why should it be waterproof? Lightning and unexpected rains are very common in the mountains. If your body is wet for a long time, serious health problems may appear.

О О
Thermal Shirt

Thermal shirt must fully cover upper body and have long sleeves. It will preserve runner’s body heat and protect against low temperatures. It may be a thermal underwear shirt or a fleece pullover

Why?

Extreme temperature changes are very common in the mountains. Moreover, there may be some situations when a runner will have to slow down or even stop during his run. Getting injured, being too exhausted or helping another participant also may lead to a sharp decrease of body temperature before a runner gets to the nearest checkpoint or help arrives.

О О
Running pants or tights

Shorts can also be used, but only of if combined with socks they fully cover runner’s legs without leaving knees open. Under perfect weather conditions shorts may be very comfortable, but it is important for a runner to remember that if they are too short, his legs won’t be protected against scratches or bruises in case of falling.

О О
Warm hat

Warm hat will preserve heat and protect your head against cold.

Why?

Head is one of the highest heat loss areas of the body. So a light summer hat may be not appropriate for certain weather conditions.

О О
Summer hat/cap

It must fully cover the top of your head.

Why?

Summer headware protects head against sunstroke and heatstroke. It is also useful in preventing heat loss when it is slightly cold and moderately windy. Runners must have both warm hat and light summer hat.

О О
Water bottles, hydration belts or packs with total volume of at least 1 liter

Any of these options to carry water are acceptable as long as they can be refilled and do not lose water during the run. Regular cups, glasses or any other things that don’t store water cannot be used.

О О
Drinking cup

A personal cup is required for quickly and easily getting drinks on checkpoints.

Why?

We do not use disposable plastic cutlery on checkpoints for ecological reasons, and so it is important to have your own cup for getting drinks quickly during the run.

О О
Gloves

Gloves must fully cover hands and it is strongly desirable that they are made of waterproof, breathable material.

Why?

Hands are one of the highest heat loss areas of the body.
